After your character selects their first house, they will have the option of adopting a dog or cat. Your character does not have to choose one if they don't want, and if they already own one and bring it with them to Juniper Village, they can keep that. If you don't already have an animal living with you and you befriend certain kinds of wild animals, they may also become your pet. You may only have one pet, and should you choose that you don't want it any more, you can have the Whistling Grass Ranch take care of it for you, with a fee of 100G for disowning the pet you agreed to take care of.
Caring for your animal is simple- all you really have to do is put any kind of food in their bowl outside once a day, and they'll be fine. Any kind of food will do, except for spoiled cooking or poisonous mushrooms. You may also feed them again at night, if you so choose. Playing with your pet will make them like you more, and if word gets out that you're mistreating your pet, it can very easily be taken away from you, and you can be fined up to 1000G. You can name your pet whatever you want, whether it be adopted from these choices, or found in the wild.
You should keep track of your pet in your storage board in whatever manner you choose. Make sure to keep track of what kind of animal it is (listed below, or if you adopt one from the wild, you will be told upon adopting it, since there are different 'types' of the same species), its gender, name, and how many Hearts of affection they have for you. Just like with villagers, a full heart looks like a ♥, a half-heart like a ♦, a half of a bad heart like a ○, and a full bad heart like a •. You will be told by me or another admin when your pet's affection grows or drops, and by how much. Each pet starts with an affection of one ♥ for you. At certain heart levels, your pet can do different jobs for you, if you want. You'll be alerted if this is possible by a message when your pet's heart level increases.
On fair-weathered days, all animals enjoy being let outside. The only time you really need to keep your animals in is when it's raining or in other ways unmanageable. If you let your animal outside and leave it out when you go to do any of your daily duties at all, it will mostly stay within your yard, with the exception of cats, who roam about town more than dogs. Your pets may eat your crops if they aren't fenced in and you let them out while you're gone, so be warned. If you leave your animal outside and it does leave your yard, don't worry- so long as it doesn't have any worse than three •'s of affection (or perhaps hatred would be a better word), it will automatically come back. You don't need to feed your pet directly- just leave food in its bowl next to its house and it will eat it on its own. You can bring your animal in the house with you at night, if you want, or let it sleep outside in its own tiny house. Certain animal personalities may enjoy certain actions more than others, so be sure to observe how your pet reacts to however you treat it.
Finally, here are the possible choices for starter pets:
Pointy-Eared Terrier (♀ or ♂)- A perky young puppy that's relatively small and very energetic. It's a friendly dog and is very affectionate. It takes command pretty easily and can be befriended quickly.
Floppy-Eared Lapdog- (♀ or ♂)- Another young, small puppy, this one less energetic and a bit quieter, but still very loving. It requires less physical attention than most other dogs and is very easy to care for. It can't do much trick-wise, but is a somber, trusting, loyal pet.
Golden, Black, or Chocolate Lab / Retriever (♀ or ♂)- These dogs are much larger than their smaller counter parts and are much more athletic. They require more attention in the ways of exercise than the others and make the best dogs at assisting with work. They get along great with children, but are less friendly with other animals.
Varieties of Lap Dogs (includes chihuahuas, pugs, bijons, etc.), (♀ or ♂)- All these dogs are very small and can easily be carried your arms. They are somewhat lazy and have higher needs when it comes to grooming. They are extremely affectionate towards not just you, but everyone, and are able to do certain, unique jobs that no other type of dog can do.
Varieties of Cats (includes all species since all cats in this RP have the same requirements and capabilities), (♀ or ♂)- Cats are certainly a different kind of animal for a different type of person. They like to roam around town much more than dogs, and don't require as much physical attention from you. They aren't as likely to eat any of your crops, but are also choosier about what you give them to eat. Any good cat's main diet should be fish (any fish will do, so long as it isn't poisonous), although they won't object to certain things that grow wildly. Be SURE to keep them inside when it's rainy or damp outside, because they hate water. They don't have many capabilities as far as assisting with work goes, but make up for it by being easy-going pets for easy-going people.
